Dark dark dark dark dark dark Did her part Dark dark dark dark dark dark Held the stars Who shepherded the meteors As they rained down on baby earth Who shepherded the meteors That brought the water down to earth? Who? Dark dark dark dark dark dark Did her part Dark dark dark dark dark dark Held the stars She worked the night shift, yeah Who gave cover to the seed, Aching bursting to be free? Who gave cover to the people fleeing, crossing, breaking free? Who? Dark dark dark dark dark dark Did her part Dark dark dark dark dark dark Held the stars Light’s ok for doing things But dark is where the wild bird sings Light’s alright, you think you see But the stars never move, The firmament needs Who? Dark dark dark dark dark dark Did her part Dark dark dark dark dark dark Held the stars Was there a light on in the womb? Will there be one on in the tomb? Dark’s for lovers, secrets, dreams, Dark is where the wild birds scream. Whoooooooooooooooooooooooo?

I forgot to charge my phone and so I did not call but it’s not because I didn’t think of you at all For when we do indeed Do indeed meet again I will show you evidence My esteem has no end, my esteem has no end, my esteem has no end, my esteem has no end, My esteem has no end And I’ve got to clean my car so when I give you a ride my Toyota is your chariot won’t shove things to the side For when we do indeed Do indeed meet again I will show you evidence My esteem has no end, my esteem has no end, my esteem has no end And I did not wash my sheets for three months maybe more That sand and grit sang me to sleep till you walked through the door For when we do indeed Do indeed meet again I will show you evidence My esteem has no end, my esteem has no end, my esteem has no end, my esteem has no end, my esteem has no end I forgot to charge my phone and so I did not call but it’s not because I didn’t think of you at all

Iowa 03:03
I miss firecrackers, fields, and farmhouses and the dusty wood floors like the old dusty roads out there I’m so far from home At a stoplight I sit by a Festiva, a red one, like the one we rode down the long dusty roads to the lake every day that whole summer I try relaxing in my shitty city bathtub like that cool lake where you kissed me in the green green water that clung in droplets to you as if it wanted to belong to be beside you, yes it did And we got more from the books when we talked together ‘bout em on the lightning bug nights on my porch swing where your reverberating voice and your beautiful heartbeat drowned the locust from my ears as I rested on your chest, yes they did And all I want now is to hear you speak into my ear and to be there as I lay down in my lonesome bed falling asleep to the sounds of the cars and the barfights I’ve got Iowa and you in my head, yeah The long dusty roads, when will they bring me back home I’ve got Iowa and you in my head The long dusty roads, the pies and the goats, I’ve got Iowa and you in my head

How could I move on this way Leaving you behind to stay How could I move on this way Leaving you behind My heart is in a different place Now that I have treasured space My heart is in a different place But you’re still on my mind We painted sorrow everyday Traced, retraced, stained We painted sorrow everyday And that sorrow sang goodbye How could I move on this way Leaving you behind to stay How could I move on this way Leaving you behind

Hallelu 02:51
It doesn’t get to be about the future It doesn’t get to be about our dreams Dreams have given way to another dreary day It doesn’t get to be bout anything. This one has to do with screaming hallelu In this one we just have to survive In this one all we gotta do is hold on tight and make it through In this one we just have to stay alive (rustic whistling) It doesn’t get to be about the babies It doesn’t get to be about our jobs It doesn’t get to be about how we like to spend our time Sorry friends, but this one is a wash This one has to do with screaming hallelu In this one we just have to survive In this one all we gotta do is hold on tight and make it through In this one we just have to stay alive This one has to do with screaming hallelu In this one we just have to survive In this one all we gotta do is hold on tight and make it through In this one we just have to stay alive (rustic whistling)

Wire, Fire 03:30
The tinny call of snowy fall a nearly silent choir Not even the buzz of wires Wires, wires, wires, wires. Pale grey to red, gradient you’re inspired Heavy thunder, or helicopter They are getting higher Higher, higher, higher, higher The thinnest wall shivers and hollers, its flapping jaws ne’er tired Nipping soles and biting holes this gnashing cold conspires Conspires, conspires, conspires, conspires From seven on to moonbeams, dawn, I take in bluish pallor Your schedules are getting old I sit and tend fire This skeptic sold her hectic soul I sit and tend a fire Fire, fire, fire, fire

Sailor Song 05:11
Sail on, inside this mouth Beyond the mist, smoke of the sea, beyond the reef I unsee you, I believe you I unsee you, I believe you The salty sea, the glassy dark Wet hands, wet eyes, wet breath, wet heart The moon it had a golden ring, From long ago I hear her sing Sail on, you had your doubts The mast it creaks, the wind it drives Salt in your eyes I unsee you, and I need you I unsee you, and I need you The salty sea, the glassy dark Wet hands, wet eyes, wet breath, wet heart The moon it had a golden ring, From long ago I hear her sing Sail on, inside this mouth, ohhhhh Beyond the waves, beyond the known Beyond all hope Can you see me, do you believe me? Can you see me, do you need me? The deepest blue, the perfect dark, the seaweed ‘round my vessel’s heart The moon it had a golden ring The caves the floor see everything Float on, down below Shiver my bones, I’m not alone, I’m coming home. Sail across the water, sink into the water Hear the ancient singing of my briny daughter The wind undid, undid the knot, the knot that held my vessel’s heart Float into the water, deep into the water Stories pile up here, treasures for my daughter The wind undid, undid the knot, the knot that held my vessel’s heart La da da da da da da da da da da

Ocean 02:12
Darling you are an ocean and I hope I can hold it in I’m a pretty big vessel but I’ll have to wrestle my demons as I grow in to my own ocean and I’ll let you flow on in and we can share secrets and treasures from the depths within In the dark of my night not a cloud in sight and though it’s not bright your teeth are made of starlight And your smile, is it sunrays or moonrise? My darling, how can it be, how can it be that you’re also the sky? Darling you are an ocean and I hope I can hold it I’m a pretty big vessel and I will wrestle anything for you Show me your krakens Darling, I’m an ocean And when there is no sound, only breath abounds You seem confounded that I am astounded I’ll let you sink down inside, beyond, throughout I’ve got here, I’ve got you now Girl I will be the ground. Darling you are an ocean and I know I can hold it in I’m a pretty big vessel and have been wrestlin’ my demons as I grow in to my own ocean and I’ll let you flow on in I have depths for you to swim in

about

This work spans many years, places, and stages of growth. It is an attempt to capture the beginnings of an artistic practice of making music. From some of the earliest songs I wrote in Iowa to some of the most recent performed with The Royal Frog Ballet, this album is a simple document of over a decade of song making, for you.
